Right about now, I think parents of young teens need to seriously think about sitting their teen girls down and educating them on what's going on and what has happened in the past regarding boyfriend and girlfriend violence in those relationships. They need to lay it all out on the line for them.
They should try not to scare them, but for goodness sake, they must tell them about the numerous types of characters in the world who have socialopathic personalities and the potential to become a physical threat to them. The parents wouldn't have to lie to their teen girls; they'd simply show them video footage (preferably YouTube) where other teen boyfriends have hurt, or sadly, murdered their girlfriends.
In this politically correct society, parents are told that they must shelter their children from all of life's problems. Kids can't run and play because they might fall and hurt themselves. There have been times where some poor kids have worn so much protective gear, they couldn't run and play if their life counted on them doing so. On the other hand, who could blame an overprotective parent; they love their children enough to help them steer clear of danger. However, many parents often do not take drastic measures in areas of their child's life that warrant such dire intervention. Case in point, this young lady stopped eating after her parents asked her to stop seeing the teen boy who later wound up killing them both. At this point it was too late for this family because even if their daughter broke it off with the teen boy, he probably would have killed anyway.
Who knows, maybe they'd be alive if they had been aware of whom their daughter's friends were and her whereabouts at all times (Not possible, I know, but at least parents should try to find out this info on a daily basis).
Parenting teen girl tips: Parents should,
* tell teens the truth about violence in the teen culture and how to try to avoid becoming a victim of violence.
* seek counseling for girls who sneak around and see boys they do not approve of.
* tell your daughter the truth that so many girls have come to harm after dating 'bad boy' personalities.
* be frank with them and ask them if they would want someone to harm them.
>>>And, if their answer is 'no', then great! If they seem indifferent but still answer 'no' (or 'yes') I'd seek intervention, ASAP, from a counselor, clergy, or other mental health professional such as a life coach, etc.
Indeed, this is what it's coming to, parents having to return to becoming strict once again and lay down the ground rules in their homes. All families can't be saved from such tragedy, but we must all do our part to - try to save our families with warnings and good old-fashioned advice that has worked for plenty of families todate.
