Listen & Study Services Commentary:
Man shot a family's two dogs leaving one of them dead and the other seriously injured.
I'm sorry for their loss, but I couldn't help but think about if that person was me walking down that alley at the time the woman and her pups were there. Panic quickly entered my mind and does so every time I've encountered a barking dog who was off-leash; which has been about a dozen times throughout my life.
Let's see, I came across at least 3 German Shepherds, about 5 pit bulls, and a pack of stray dogs who chased me while a was riding my bike home from work at 11:30 p.m. I had pepper spray and tried to spray one of the small dogs who was nipping at my ankle, but it seemed like it (the spray) wasn't working. This happened so long ago, I can't remember why they all decided to just leave. Maybe the spray was working, but I was too frightened to focus clearly!
Anyway, I am sharing my back story about dog attacks on my person because even though I feel the man went overboard by shooting the dogs so many times, I can't judge him. Maybe he's been attacked by stray dog(s) before and shear panic quickly sat in leaving him no time to react without dire consequences. Or, maybe the lady's dogs were protecting her and became aggressive towards the stranger by barking. In other wards, maybe the lady thought her dogs were just barking, but what they were really doing were setting the stage to attack what they perceived to be an intruder. Then the man picked up on their threat and acted accordingly!
Yes, I'm speculating about this story, but I like to try and figure things out ahead of time! That's why I'm always aware of my surroundings whenever I take a walk. Within the last 5 years, while walking in my neighborhood, I've spotted several unleashed dogs and changed the direction I was headed in to avoid a confrontation with them. What I've gleaned from this story is that I must remain calm if I see unleashed dogs with their owner (this has occurred also) and I should remain calm and not run, shout at the dogs, or "SHOOT THEM!" I've even told the dog owner that I'm afraid of dogs (that's basically a lie because I love dogs) but at that time, I said it because in that moment, I was afraid of his/her dog(s). Dogs sense fear and will attack you simply based on that fear. They see it as you being aggressive and prepare to defend themselves or their owner.
Don't forget to check out the video about another story where two dogs were shot in their back yard (open back yard)! A link to it is posted below:
People in the comment section of this Yahoo video are either supporting the man who shot the dogs or they're vehemently opposing his actions. I find myself in the middle of this argument!
