This surprising incident isn't really all that surprising considering all the talk on the net about trigger-happy police officers. Even with all that talk, people can't truly say that cops go around pulling their guns out on suspects whom they deem guilty of stealing candy like this officer did to Jose Arreola, who had bought a pack of mentos mint candies prior to the officer walking into the store. That just doesn't or rarely happens. Thank goodness.
Jose said,
“It’s been a month and I still can’t shake it,” Arreola said. “It was traumatic, the whole incident."
That said, let's go back to the Internet discussions regarding officers who shoot first and then ask questions. Those incidences are way more lethal than the one in this story. For many unarmed suspects, their encounter with law enforcement has left them without their lives - And, the officers who shot and killed them? They (most of them anyways) were found not guilty of manslaughter or murder! Why? You may ask. They've testified that they were in fear of their lives, and so, they shot the suspect.
It's a good thing that Arreola didn't make any sudden moves by reaching into his pocket, he may have not been able to live to regret doing it because the officer might have thought he was going for a gun - Do you think that's too far fetched? It just so happens that it has become well known knowledge that cops react defensively to perps reaching in their pockets because too many of them, in the past, have had a gun in their pocket and shot the officer before he/she could shoot back.
Recently, one officer was found guilty of 2nd degree murder in the shooting death of an unarmed person in the back and then planting his stun-gun on him (the suspect that is) once he was down on the ground. A witness captured the whole dirty scene from beginning to end.
One person in the YH comment section (I've listed it and others on this page below:) commented on the same thing that I was thinking. I don't know much about what the police are allowed to do with someone they suspect of committing a crime, but I do know that they're taught to use deadly force when they feel their life is in danger. This was not the case this day.

- With 25 years on the job, this man definatley used excessive force in this situation. The proper way would have been to id himself without pulling his gun and telling the customer that he thought he (customer) had stolen the mentos. Then he (officer) should have asked the counter man if the customer had paid for the item. He was right to apologize but the whole thing should never have happened. The department should seriously question the officers ability to do the job correctly.

- Little known fact. Jose had a bottle of Diet Coke in his pocket and was preparing to weaponize the Mentos.
- 2C I’m not sure it’s poor training.. to pull a gun because someone may have shoplifted “candy” is a lot more deep seated than poor training. That is a personality profile that serves and protects no one.. that is a profile of poor vetting... poor management, and poor organization culture. If you have to train for “candy”..do you get a pass if they are stealing toilet paper. This is a scary indictment on the divide between those that join to serve and those that join for the power. This is a failure at so many levels.. from hiring, to performance observation.
