Judge Jen Boyd highlighted Couches' rich upbringing as a huge factor in his case. Meaning that, Couches parents were so rich, they didn't raise him to understand right-from-wrong; therefore, he was not responsible for his criminal actions. That judge is thee same judge who gave a poor kid, who killed one, while on a DUI, 10 years behind bars:

Don't misunderstand my comparison of these two youths, I only want them and others like them to get equal justice on behalf of their victims' surviving family members - which is, send all 'DUI' offenders to prison for a lengthy amount of time when they've killed people. This punishment makes since to me and to most rational folks.

Back to Affluenza teen

Interestingly, not only did 'Affluenza boy' not serve the original 10-year sentence judge Boyd was going to give him, he was detained again, soon after being given the light sentence despite having killed the four people, after authorities found out he attended a party where boose was in use -  a violation of his probation. Then he and his mother fled to Mexico. Ironically, their wealth did not shield them from being extradited back home to the good-old-USA to stand trial and sentencing. Ethan Couch was released in 2018 after serving a nearly two-year sentence. 

But, but, but, I thought once a criminal violates his probation, his criminal case reverts back to the original sentencing - in Couches' case, that was 10 years and not two. Well, at least he did nearly 2 years.
