L&SS Commentary:
As far as the (AP) Associated Press news article could go to relay to us (the general public) what's going on around the nation regarding drive-thru COVID-19 testing, is a bit disappointing to me. The writer(s) did give detailed information on companies and states who are carrying out the testing; however, it (AP) failed to suggest ways to make the testing drive-thrus operate more smoothly. For example, I don't want to only read how bad things are going and how the people who need the virus testing the most are not receiving them. I guess, I don't want this because it creates anxiety when I think of all those needlessly suffering.
Maybe I'll stop writing to research on ways companies can become better organized. Offhand, all I remember about this topic from business school, was that companies who standardized products and services were the most efficient.
Okay, I'm back. I scanned over a random webpage (https://redbooth.com/hub/10-ways-project-managers-stay-organized/) and before I was halfway finished scanning the page, I remembered what bothered me so much about this AP news article: I wondered why did those companies start a project (drive-thru medical check points) without knowing where they would purchase or obtain equipment? I kept reading...
According to this webpage article, the steps to a successful project management include the following:
* First, the company must set expectations early [Yes, all the drive-thru COVID-19 testing spots should have had ample testing supplies ahead of time - they should not have winged it].
* Second, drive-thru site managers should know the scope of the project, according to this article.
"As a project manager, the first step in the project planning process is defining its scope. To do this effectively, you need to understand the project(s)":
Deliverables: What are the expected outputs and outcomes? [What are they expecting to come of the testing? My guess would be, they expect hundreds of sick people to seek their help. They (staff) must be ready to oblige them.]
Costs: Is there a set budget? [See, Available resources, below]
Timeframe: How long do you have to complete the project? [Yes, why didn't those responsible for the drive ups take timing into consideration? After all, everyone should know, by now, those infected with this virus do not have time on their side. So, once again, according to this AP news article, ill people were delayed treatment because whole systems are inoperable leaving patients out in the cold when many of them should be quarantined in the hospital].
Available resources: What physical, human and financial resources do you have at your disposal? [Yes, all the drive-thru COVID-19 testing spots should have had ample testing supplies ahead of time - they should not have opened up and just winged it].
Stakeholders: Who is involved in the project? Who are the influencers, decision makers, and recipients? [Who are the players - E.g., Walgreens, Walmart, etc? And, how would those players affect my (Project manager) project (drive-thru screening project)?]
* Third, Follow a Template. [Okay, so there isn't a template for this project, but there should already be some sort of emergency triage type plan similar to or like hospitals use during a crises and they don't have ample hospital space so they set up space outdoors or in a auditorium nearby. Maybe managers could refer to those with expert experience in triage! Also, why isn't one person appointed to oversee all drive-ups? The whole process needs streamlining.]
* Fourth (the rest of this list is irrelevant to my point) You can read them here...
