Commentator, Chief Editor, L&SS
Listen & Study Services' Commentary:
On the night of April 15th, 2023 in (Urbana) Champaign, Ohio a murder took place:
As thousands of us mothers gleefully celebrated this past Mother's Day on Sunday, May 14th, 2023, others of us had a bitter-sweet experience!
The mom in this sad story is Jaie Marie mother of a victim of murder, Kaden Harkins, and she wants other mothers to avoid the kind of heart-wrenching pain she endured after Jamie King (ALLEGEDLY?) shot and killed her 25-year-old daughter!
I had such a hard time writing this commentary because every time I thought about what this person (?) did to this young woman, I'd start to tear up! Then, my thoughts took me to her (the victim's) mother. I thought, "If I feel this way, her mother must be in shear inconsolable agony!"
Right after those thoughts, I thought, Jaie contacted as many places and people as she could to help her in her plight to fight gun violence, so I hope this story doesn't grow cold with time after the murderer goes to prison! After all, Jaie's and King's family agreed their relationship was toxic and tried to break the two up, but she (Jaie) said that that didn't work and not even distance kept them apart!
After reading about this murder, I wanted to help Jaie and other parents in their fight, but I didn't want to write for the sake of writing; I wished to really make a difference. "Then, I woke up!"
Don't get me wrong, I believe that all of us fighting for change, in gun violence laws, are not doing so in vain since any help is better than none!
I came up with the idea to share her story here on L&SS in the hope that many would read and share her story with those who would stand to benefit the most from it! I'm not just crossing my fingers, I'm praying this will happen. My commentary will reach families who are experiencing a violent or aggressive human entity who makes their lives miserable. After reading it (my commentary) and Jaie Marie's Story about her daughter's murder, they'll heed these warnings and finally take urgent measures to stop that person from crossing the line and taking their loved ones life!
Please like and/or share or both...
Kaden's Story:
_________>>>>>>>UPDATE:
Two days ago, I IM'd directly with Jaie Marie, Kaden Harkins' mother regarding the progress of King's (Jamie King the convicted murderer of her daughter Kaden!) conviction trail.
Jaie seems less stressed in spite of the whole "Mess", as she called this situation. She went to King's trials and listened to him speak. She said that he spoke highly of Kaden. I simply listened to what I couldn't hear her say (I read it in the IM)! I didn't want to miss a thing, so I never wrote anything back. I just meditated on her mood. I didn't read that she hated that King spoke kindly of her child! Nor was I hoping to read that. It was more like, "I expected her to say something like this!" But then, I felt a sense of calm when she didn't go in that direction! I thought, "It's best not to speculate on how she felt about that!"
My focus shifted to the information she presented in the IM. It read that Jamie King had not shot Kaden 5 times as we were originally told! He shot this young woman 13 times (Talk about "OVER FREAKEN KILL!")! I became livid at reading that! It went on to read that he shot her (Kaden) in her "...head, heart, and lungs..." (the same news source as above). He traveled to her to try to rekindle a relationship with her but decided that he wanted to leave instead. So, he wanted her truck and that's when he made the choice to shoot and kill her for it.
This source mentioned that King had a violent past as well as a drug one! Need I mention it, "he had a history of illegal possession of (firearms) too! No surprise there!
Let's chat about the drugs!
When my eyes landed on the word 'drugs', I was taken back, mentally, to the day of the murder or around that time! Well, after I read that he shot her to death, I pondered, (by-the-way, "...he shot her [numerous times] with her own gun...") - (the same news source above)! The thought crossed my mind, ", I wonder if drugs played a role in this murder!" He did all of this after their family members tried to separate them on numerous occasions! So, it makes sense to me that his (King's) drug conviction had to stem from his drug history and him having drugs in his system at the time of the murder (Or, why bring it up during his latest conviction trial?). Speaking of which (His prior convictions), King was told his probation for those crimes was overturned and he had to serve the original sentences for those crimes as well! This judge did well! CORRECTION!: Jamie King, according to Kaden's mother Jaie Marie, didn't have drugs in his system at the time of her daughter's murder!
How long did he (Jamie King convicted murderer) get?:
Just when I fully understood how the Judicial System works, so I thought, where it comes to First Degree murder, this court comes along to assure me that I do not know much about it at all! For one thing, King didn't plan to murder Kaden (there was no 'Malice Aforethought'), which would have gotten him 25 years to life in prison w/out parole; so I thought:

Malice aforethought is the "premeditation" or "predetermination" (with malice) required as an element of some crimes in some jurisdictions and a unique element for first-degree or aggravated murder in a few. Insofar as the term is still in use, it has a technical meaning that has changed substantially over time.

I was disgusted as I read that King only received 18 years with the possibility of parole. I thought King was going to receive 25 years to life w/out parole, and have the book thrown at him, as well as receive every conviction there ever was associated w/1st degree murder and a slew of other convictions brought against him! Man, "Was I way wrong!" Also, this article didn't mention his degree of conviction!
CORRECTION!: According to Jaie Marie, Kaden's mother, the following quote is how she understood JK's trial proceedings: "...From the way it has all been explained to us, she says, 'Jamie will die in prison." "But, keep in mind they have hidden many things from us at this time. That's why we had prayed this would go to trial. Then Jamie decided to listen to his second attorney and pled guilty that he had no chance that a jury would give him a better plea deal because all evidence proved he had committed the crime..." [And,] "...Like I stated, I don't want to hurt anyone. I just want Kadens story to be heard, and I won't have a chance until after the 1st of the year..." She reiterated, "I do not wish to hurt anyone. Nothing brings Kaden back to her family. My daughters death removed a very, very dangerous criminal from the streets. She did something, the police could not. Kentucky and Ohio failed Kaden! Kaden paid the ultimate price, so in her family's eyes, she is the only HERO here. She loved helping others, and she gave her life, proving just that..."
It turns out that I do know a little about 1st degree murder, "It comes with a minimum 25 year to life sentence but may also come with the possibility of parole!" I didn't search further, but you can do so if you'd like. Then come back and comment on it! Or, if you know the rest of this info, share your opinion!
Please! Don't get all technical on us though!!!! Use Layman's terminology instead of legal jargon!

The prison sentence for 1st degree murder varies by state and depends on the presence of aggravating factors12. Generally, 1st degree murder convictions result in life in prison, with a minimum of 25 years before being eligible for parole12. However, some states may have lower or higher minimum sentences for 1st degree murder2.
Once again, I ask that you kindly share Kaden's Story with as many as you can through various media!
Thanks on behalf of Jaie Marie!
