ORANGE COUNTY PARK, Florida:
This is an amazing story, as well as an amazing turn of events! Happily, this little brave 10-year-old girl was able to pry open an alligator's jaws and escape further harm or worse, being killed.
Where and how the girl was attacked:
Lake Mary Jane, where this young girl was sitting in a designated swimming area in 2-foot-deep water at Moss Park when an eight foot 9-inch alligator attacked her and bit her calf and knee, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report.
I wanted to know if this was a somewhat normal occurrence in Florida (not just this lake because apparently, it isn't normal there since they've set up a safe swimming area). I found a website dedicated to crocodile sightings, bites, and deaths related to humans in particular.
I read quite a few stories about safe swimming areas and pondered whether I or anyone else should take the risk and swim in any of those so-called safe swimming areas after this little girl was attacked.
One of the stories I came across on the above link, shared one experience he had while living in Florida, he said that a man took a stick and nudged a croc's nose, but the croc simply opened its mouth without chasing the man; whose young daughter stood by, watching in horror, as her father's face turned white out of fear. The author of this article said that man and his daughter were lucky the croc didn't go after them because crocs can outrun a horse for a few minutes - clocking in a 30 mph. That sounds like a sprint to me...
I'll take this author's word for it and keep my distance should I ever visit Florida and come across a crocodile!
