Sorry for the clickbait, but I just had to draw your attention to a pertinent matter. This subject has been revisited thousands of times in the news, on blogs, and in letters of personal pleas for help from inmates.
Before I get started, let me say this, "I feel every one who is convicted and is in prison should finish their time unless they have exhausted all appeals and are indeed innocent!" There are not-for-profit organizations who have and can help those individuals. Unfortunately, and yet still, some innocent inmates were and are innocent but have been and will be executed. My sincere heartfelt prayers for their loved ones and friends!
I digress! Anyway, I am not writing about that though!
I am writing to share a bit of information to which I knew nothing about, and I want those of us who had no idea what was going on inside prisons, to know a little about those things going on.
The person who replied to this Quora post gave a breakdown of how the prison term works, but I was more impressed with the second Quora post (Find the link below) where the poster asked someone to explain details of prison life... I'll share a little info on that with you too.
The first poster wants to know how long her husband would have to be in prison since he was sentenced to 125 months? I thought, he'll serve 10.4 years. I was wrong and here's why according to a replier to the 1st comment:

I was just released from Federal prison. This comments from others is somewhat inaccurate. They are not applying the FSA as the law was written. They don’t care if you program, as long as you don’t refuse programming, then you are “programming”. I earned a college degree, completed RDAP, and took 58 programs. Guys that had one program earned the same amount of FSA credit as I. Yes, inmates can earn 15 days per month off their sentence. However It’s maxed out at one year. They don’t care if you’re low or Min, they are giving 15 days, not 5. Yes you must be low recidivism rate or lower, which is fairly easy to obtain if you don’t have an extensive criminal history. And yes you must not have a disqualifying offense.
Halfway house (RRC) will be solely up to the case manager, not your actual conduct. I only received 4 months RRC and was a “Model inmate” without a single disciplinary action. I saw guys get 12 months RRC who did nothing but get into trouble. For this reason it’s all about what case manager you get, and whether or not they like you. They do not follow protocol, and do as they please.
He can also get a year off for completion of RDAP, but must have a documented substance abuse problem within gone year of arrest (such as disclosure of this in the pre sentence investigation) and not have a gun charge.
in short, this would be the best case scenario
125 Months
-18 months Goodtime
-12 months FSA
-12 months RDAP
-12 Months RRC
He can be out in 5.5 years minus any jail time credit If he doesn’t have a disqualifying offense, and he stays out of trouble.
I was actually happy to read that her husband wasn't going to do 10 + years; I don't know why I was glad about that since I do not know what he did to be in prison in the first place!
Now, a little about the second comment regarding getting details on prison life. And once again, immediately, I found it difficult, to feel any sympathy for inmates, not even the person who was one. And, I was determined to keep it that way no matter what I read about prisoner mistreatment. Then I read the next Quora comment. The poor guy (he says) was falsely accused of sexual assault by his teenage step-daughter. I can't say if I believe him or not because that isn't my call to do that! But believe me, I'm no fool to think that children haven't accused an adult falsely of sexual assault! So, let's just say, "I'm giving this human being the benefit of doubt!" Meaning, "I'll take his word for it for now so that we can get through this brief summary!"
The second commenter wrote that his first day prison was an eye-opener and a scary one at that! He started off by sharing with us (his readers) how two men kept asking him what he was in for and to prove he wasn't in for child molestation! They threatened him that if he didn't show his paperwork in five days, they'd do to him what they do to all whom they've nicknamed, "Chomos!" That frightened him so much, he put in a request to be move to another cell block the next day.
