I, like so many other older children, used to come home from school and watch all my favorite television "Programs"! I cannot remember the times Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood (aired 1968 to 2001) would come on though. But, will never ever forget how Mr. Rogers made me feel... I just had a profound memory about my prior last sentence...

Maya Angelou's Quote, rings true about Mr. Rogers!
Mr. Rogers' target audience, according to this post, was children ages 3 to six-years-old. Hmmm? That age range should have been expanded to include older kids who were living in tumultuous environments whether in foster care, like me, or with their real parents. I clearly remember watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood when I was 8 or nine-years-old. When the show was on (in black and white screen) I was glued to it! I knew the theme song from the beginning to the end! I loved seeing other kids, who looked like me, interacting with an adult who looked way different than them. I also remember thinking, he seems like an angel... kindness radiated from him through the t.v. screen. I felt like he was my dad at those times and in those moments... I felt a similar way about Michael Landon who played the father on the Little House on Prairie which aired 1974 to 1983.
The difference between the two dads was that Mr. Rogers exuded enormous character on stage and off. And, I never heard a negative rumor about him throughout his career. Unlike Michael Landon who had a few concerning times in the spot light! Plus, I never saw how Michael Landon interacted in real life with children of color. I think when I was a child, I only pretended Landon was my father only as long as I was watching the shows he starred in.
This Quora post tells how his wife made great efforts to play down notions that Mr. Rogers was perfect and would often times do things like discipline his children like any normal loving father does.
This commentary is not a goodbye letter to Mr. Rogers, it is a memorial! I hope all of you can relate to my sentiments towards him and his wife (surely she played a major role in his life).
