Tornadoes are nothing new here in Illinois. Still, each of us who live here should be prepared for the worst; as much as we can possibly do so that is.

I researched tornadoes when I first moved back here, eleven years ago, to my origins in Southern California where I was raised. Six months later I obtained a job. While working at that company, I was given the tremendous assignment to act in my employer's place as an Officiator over Safety Meetings - I had to research all that position entailed. I learned a lot.

One of those researched topics that intrigued me the most was 'Tornado Preparedness'. I found out that in 1990 -at the time- there had been a huge F5 tornado that had killed 29 people and injured hundreds more. I wanted to make sure I had all the facts and alerts to present to Safety Officers of our 18 buildings.

Since I had taken the meeting attendance from an average attendance of about six to nearly 100 percent compliance, I had their undivided attention at this meeting. Needless to say, the meeting was very successful. Many Safety Officers asked questions and I was prepared and answered all of them. Several of them even had some facts for me regarding that 1990 tornado that I had not read about.

I disseminated handouts with tornado facts (From memory). Some of those facts were:

* Tornado Season begins from March thru September (Or when weather patterns warn of one pending).

* Open windows to let strong winds pass-through

* Head to a tornado shelter

* If no tornado shelter, go to a closet (some people have survived in their bathtub)

* Do not drive during a tornado (head to a bridge or tunnel)
