I was born in Illinois but raised and lived a considerable amount of my adult life in Southern California. So, I am thoroughly familiar with its (S. California's) wild fire problems. About that, "Unfortunately, little has changed I see!"
Firstly, I feel it's such a shame that all of the families, throughout decades, have lost their loved ones, pets, and property. Their property, horses and other livestock had insurance but loved ones, and pets such as cats, dogs, bunnies are gone forever! So sad!
The reason S. Cal is so subjected to wild fires is it is basically a dessert (this is common information - From what I remember about geography, that's called a Sub-Arid Climate. I was close, it's actually called 'Semi-Arid Climate' (Meaning, 'Somewhat Dry Climate') along with a few other climates such as Dessert and Mountain Climates).
When I was a child, we had to monitor and conserve how much water we used and could not water our lawns during very hot summer weather. If we were caught allowing water to flow down sewer drains or sidewalks from our properties, we were issued a fine.
What the MINDS author of this post says about Southern California wild fires relation to its imported Eucalyptus trees struck me funny but intrigued me more because I hadn't heard anything like it before.
He said that Eucalyptus trees stoke brush fires by producing and spreading embers faster than other trees since they have so much oil in them. I had to investigate his theory to see how true it is...

Burning eucalyptus bark can be carried by the wind and spread wildfires. Several readers have asked whether Australia's famous eucalyptus trees have helped spread the bushfires which have raged for months. Also known as the gum tree, these forests are some of the most flammable in the world. How do eucalyptus trees spread fires?Australia fires: Have gum trees made the bushfires worse ...
www.bbc.com/news/world-51132965
Then there's this guy, an expert named 'Chris Brays, a paleoclimatologist from Monash University in Melbourne', who says that Australia's Eucalyptus trees are no more likely to be the main cause of wild fire rapid spread than California's pine trees.
There you have it, 'No real reason to accept the idea that Eucalyptus trees do more than other SoCal trees during its forest fire season!'
Regardless, please remember the seemingly never ending drought still exists in Southern California, so please do or continue to do your part by clearing dry brush and other highly or flammable materials around your premises!
