Another superbug has broken out in the United States at UC Irvine Medical Center's neonatal intensive care unit. This bug had been wreaking havoc since December 2016. The general public had been kept in the dark, maybe health officials didn't want to alarm us, as doctors got to work to find the source of the infections.
Years ago, my doctor and my daughter's Pediatrician told me that they will only prescribe an antibiotic if there was no other recourse. They said that because of over-prescribing antibiotics to patients, the infections have become resistant to them and thus, they don't work.
My has time changed, it seems that that's not what's going on now, old disease are coming back stronger and more frequently because they've developed super-strains and some of these superbugs attach themselves to other super-bugs and spread from animal to humans. A few of those super bacteria are E. coli and Mrsa. The first person in the US some how contracted E. coli that has something called MCR which is an antibiotic resistant protector of bacteria. This person contracted the disease, which carries 15 different genes helping its resistance, especially a gene called, mcr-1, inside the country. Health professionals said mcr-1 has many of them dreading its presence.
Unfortunately, this KTLA news article doesn't say what happened to the infected infants; I sure hope they lived. And, if we hear any updates on their condition, we'll come back and update you.
