Iran on Sunday blocked access to Instagram and a popular messaging app used by activists to organize and publicize the protests now roiling the Islamic Republic, as authorities said two demonstrators had been killed overnight in the first deaths attributed to the rallies. Associated Press
Demonstrations began Thursday over the economic woes plaguing Iran continued into Sunday and is said to appear to be the largest to strike the Islamic Republic since the protests that followed the country's disputed 2009 presidential election. AP
According to the AP, one of the Social Media apps the Iranian government blocked was, and is still blocked, is a popular one named 'Telegram' where users send messages to one another. The other Social Media app, that was blocked was,and also still is, is Instagram which is also a messaging app. This AP news article didn't mention why Facebook (also a social media platform) which owns Instagram has been banned in Iran since protests against the disputed 2009 re-election of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I can only speculate how blocking social media would change Iran's adult's minds when they feel they've been wronged.

A wave of spontaneous protests over Iran's weak economy swept into Tehran on Saturday, with college students and others chanting against the government just hours after hard-liners held their own rally in support of the Islamic Republic's clerical establishment. According to the article; however, Telegraph's operators were told that it was blocked because it was encouraging violence among Iran's citizens.
Did you visualize, like I did, the mayhem that would occur if such an ordeal happened here in the United States and our Social Media apps were blocked? It would be shear pandemonium with hundreds of thousands (more like millions upon millions) of protesters littering whole city streets for miles. There would be much blood shed (okay, I might be exaggerating a tiny bit on this one), but people will get hurt after being trampled, or shot with rubber bullets, and/or getting into fights because someone accidently ran into another protester running away from riot police.
It's so sad that two Iranians were killed while protesting; their government sure knows how to get its people worked up into a frenzy and escalating the problem. Someone on social media had footage that had gunshots that sounded in the background right before the two people fell to the ground. AP
