It's a well known fact that eating healthy and staying fit most likely will lead to a longer life. Since that is the case, why did Mr. Richard Overton live to be 112-years-old after consuming ice cream (with its fatty sugary content), smoking cigars, and drinking hard liquor every day of his adult life? Something about this just doesn't seem fair to those of us who eat such desserts as infrequently as possible and don't drink heavy drinks, nor do we smoke (period) because it's (ice cream) like, "One moment on the lips, would be a life-time on the hips." As that old saying goes. Most of us women aren't willing to take chances with our weight. How about after reading this article, do you think many women will indulge more in ice cream and/or whiskey? I for one, will not! 

Also, this news article failed to mention how Mr. Overton smoked cigars for many years. That's number three so-called bad habit. I'm going to give you all a link to a writer who has done his research and will prove to you that smoking cigars does not in fact lead to an early death @ Facts-on-smoking-you-are-not-told

He smoked as many as a dozen cigars a day, and he began smoking cigars back in 1924—94 years ago—when he was 18 years old. His favorite cigar was an inexpensive, machine-made brand called a Tampa Sweet.

As I've said, I will not take part in this gentleman's daily dietary pleasure even though I believe what he did to keep from gaining weight and dying an early death from that diet was he consumed those two (food/drink) in moderation. That's a trait now a days. Most American's aren't able to eat in moderation. No wonder we are the fattest nation in the world. I'm over-weight my self, so, I know that if I start eating ice cream daily, there's no stopping me. I'll work my way up to a gallon a day and become as big as a house.

How about you, will you now follow in Mr. Overton's footsteps and eat your daily dose of ice cream and drink a glass of whiskey until you've reached the ripe-old-age of 112th with any kind of luck? Or, like me, you think that Mr. Overton may have the genes for that lifestyle or he is very controlled with how much food/drink he takes in.

Well, I think I'll keep eating my way (vegan) and see if it will continue to help me live a long life. I'll settle for 95  to 100-years of age.

The Story:

​Richard Overton was the oldest World War II veteran (and quite possibly to be the oldest man in the U.S.) died on Thursday night in Austin, Texas, his hometown. He was 112. Overton, who survived Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima, became quite famous in his late years. Not only for his service, but for his unconventional-and well, fun-approach to living.

For starters, he ate ice cream every day. “I eat butter pecan. If you want to buy any, you better buy butter pecan,” he said in a documentary about himself. He also smoked 12 cigars a day and liked to spike his coffee with whiskey. “When you put that whiskey in there, it makes your muscles get warm,” he told the TODAY show. Though his lifestyle would not be approved or endorsed by the American Medical Association, he was clearly doing something right. What other 109-year old can you name that has renewed his license (to drive his old Fork pickup truck) at the ripe age of 109? Texas Governor Greg Abbot called him “an American icon and Texas legend,” and we couldn't agree more.
