As you've probably heard, Twitter owner Elon Musk posted a poll asking whether he should allow former president Donald Trump to be allowed back on Twitter.
Not that my opinion matters one little bit, but I think that we (both Republicans, Democrats, and others) are blowing this situation out of proportion!
Here's why I say this,
As of lately, current Twitter users and former users have decided to fight it out online for all to see. There are those who made mass exodus from Twitter (mostly liberal leaning folks) citing anger over Trump's reemergence back on Twitter where prior to his ban, he insulted and offended many of them, they said! Conservatives, on the other hand, are happy he's back and welcome him with open arms!
I'm not sure if what I'm about to write has much to do with this somewhat politically charged Social Media disagreement! But, here I go: Elon Musk said recently that he used to be Democrat but has changed his mind. However, I don't remember reading if he had become Republican or not!
Now, my reason for bringing up Musk's political stance!
Elon Musk said last week, after he reinstated Trump's Twitter account, that it's wrong to ban someone who hasn't broken any laws and that's why he reinstated Trump's account. He added that it was also wrong to ban a seated US president. Since then, he has gone on to reinstate most banned Twitter accounts. Quite frankly, many left leaning Twitter users were so scared by this, Musk's last Twitter unban moves, they hurriedly deleted their Twitter accounts.
They didn't know that deleting their accounts would leave a void for sneaky people to adopt their Twitter handle and use it for nefarious activities. But, this is a different commentary! I had not thought of that possibility. Then again, why would I give this topic even one second of thought when it has little to do with (L&SS) Listen & Study Services? L&SS simply shares pertinent information about Social Media and it does this without taking political sides. Okay, this stance means some partisan visitors to this site are not happy that we do not chose a side and defend it, but we are optimistic that we can make this much needed website successful without being contentious. At the same time, we do agree that shutting people up isn't a good method and will backfire on a business that engages in such activities. We (L&SS staff) believe it would also be wrong to allow tyrants to run amok on our site as well! Tyrants' behaviors ranges from racism, intimidation, threats of violence, verbal (& video taped), and other criminal activities.
Can you see that calling someone fat or orange, or the like, should not be grounds for banning that person. If someone attacks another's race, for example when, "Trump called Covid 19 the China Virus" I didn't see it as being racist because he wasn't talking about the people's race, he was talking about Wuhan, China where the virus originated! Yet, so many hundreds of people refused to listen to the truth and only wanted think race! I felt nervous about this topic and avoided it as much as possible!
Since L&SS has political news reference sites, we must have some type of political dialog here and there, but it (L&SS) is never involved in volatile feuds. Are writers write what people are discussing on Social Media and why! I saw and continue to see Trump's tweets as 'in poor taste' but not racist! Twitter dissenters also mentioned Trump's spread of misinformation and disinformation on Twitter. Once again, doing either of these isn't against the law but rude! The only problem I see is if he did something like Alex Jones and spread the kind of disinformation that equaled breaking US laws. Alex Jones spread lies that no one died (he meant children either) at the Sandy Hook massacre! Those lies cost him dearly in a Defamation Lawsuit!
Even though what Trump did was abhorrant and offensive, it wasn't slander! I understant that Asians worldwide were offended and subsequently physically attacked simple for being mistaken for being Chinese (My son-in-law, who is Korean, was included and very concerned for his and his mother and siblings and other family member's safety- My daughter and I were so worried the racism would come our way)! Those situations were repercussions (not defamations) of Trump's bad choice of words! His words helped bad people harm innocent people of Asian descent. So unfortunate that he had not learned a childhood lesson against saying things that might hurt others feelings or gossiping and helping dull-brained opportunist to attack the innocent!
Another thing, Trump was complaining about the ban but he has yet to use his account since it was reinstated.
In the end, it's a win-win situation.
