Surprisingly, I very recently found out that female dogs have periods!
Well, technically,

female dogs do bleed and are in a high risk state of being impregnated by a male dogs if not spayed to stop them from doing so during these times.
From what I've learned from a little research regarding this topic, female dogs, when they bleed, are not at all like human females when they have their menstrual periods once a month on average. Female dogs are 'in heat' a specific amount of times each year (one source I found online at http://en.paperblog.com/dog-menstruation-55409/) called those times in a female dog's life, dog menstruation/heat.
I was just curious as to why people seem to differ on this topic. I didn't find a thorough answer; however, I am glad to have found out that when a female dog is in heat, it is not proper to say it is on its period. On the other hand, it is okay to say it is menstruating :?/ Uh? Go figure!
